Breaking Boundaries: NRW-Forum Explores the Visual Landscape of Digital Art

Do we need walls if it doesn't rain? What environments does digital art need? What do they look like? What roles will curators have?

These are just some of the urgent questions that the NRW-Forum was curious to ask – and perhaps answer – about art in the virtual realm. Alongside artist Christian Mio Loclair, the NRW-Forum set out to explore the aesthetic divisions that digital space needs through an avant garde exhibition space for digital art.

Brief

With the challenge of leveraging its extensive experience in digital culture to delve into digital art, the NRW-Forum sought to address pressing questions about virtuality, digital space, and the evolving roles of curators.

Solution

Collaborating with the NRW-Forum, NRW-Forum Düsseldorf and nextmuseum.io, Journee designed and created not just a virtual space, but an architectural monument and experiential workshop.

Drawing inspiration from the Forum while pushing the boundaries of digital possibilities, this space—featuring "Virtual Residencies"—creates an interactive platform for dialogue, elevating artistic exhibitions while cementing the NRW-Forum as a prominent location worldwide for visitors both physical and virtual.

The result is an avant-garde exhibition space for digital art. Visitors embark on a virtual journey with nothing more than a smartphone or laptop, immersing themselves in a new realm.

The project is spearheaded by the inaugural exhibition "Come out and dance" by Studio Christian Mio Loclair, where visitors are invited to explore the boundaries of augmented reality.

Success

Through digital annexes and virtual residencies for digital artists, the NRW-Forum aims to occupy digital spaces and foster ongoing dialogue between artists, the Forum, and the digital realm, pioneering the way forward for other institutions.

By collaborating with the NRW-Forum, we showcase a commitment to art and aesthetic presentation in the highest quality, solidifying the NRW-Forum's reputation as a trailblazer.

Christian Mio Loclair, Journee's CEO and artist, expresses his deep appreciation in collaborating with the NRW-Forum. By incorporating new forms, colours, and innovative ways to explore art online, the project represents a significant bound forward in the evolution of digital art exhibition.

Through continued efforts, the NRW-Forum will use the project to showcase artwork from myriad artists through open calls, providing a platform for their creative expressions and ensuring a vibrant, ever-evolving digital art landscape.

What they say about us
  • Our aim was to create a virtual site that is not a digital twin of the NRW-Forum, but a place in its own right that takes up and expands elements of our venue. The wwwforum offers a field of experimentation for artists as well as visitors and explores the possibilities of digital exhibiting. We are excited to see how the space will develop with the upcoming virtual residencies and hope that more art institutions will venture into the metaverse.
